Management Options

computer-galOptions for Managing Your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Your healthcare practitioner may recommend various approaches to manage your IBS. The most widely used recommendations are:

Dietary Guidelines for IBS

To help manage IBS symptoms, it is important to eat a balanced and varied diet. Limit or avoid foods that can trigger symptoms. For example, high-fat foods, lactose (e.g. milk sugar), fructose, caffeine and alcohol may trigger symptoms in some people.

Healthcare practitioners often recommend gradually increasing fibre in your diet, starting with 2-3 grams per day. Fibre may reduce the constipation caused by IBS, because it makes the stool soft and easier to pass. Fibre is found in foods such as whole-grain breads and cereals, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Stress Management

If you have stress related to your IBS, be sure to talk to your healthcare practitioner. He or she may recommend ways to manage your stress. Common stress management tools include regular exercise, taking time to relax and getting an adequate amount of sleep every night.

Medications

Your healthcare practitioner may either prescribe medications or recommend over-the-counter products to manage your IBS. Commonly prescribed and recommended products can include laxatives, anti-diarrheals, probiotics and antispasmodics (for pain). Most currently offered medications can have side effects, so you should always consult your healthcare practitioner if you experience any side effects or if the product is not providing relief of your symptoms.
